Alcalá de Guadaira, Sevilla PSOE Proud First to Privatize a Library

CNT Jaen would like to express its complete rejection of the PSOE and the PSOE mayor’s privatizing policies. We recently found out (http://www.rebelion.org/noticia.php?id=120571) that the municipal public library in Alcalá de Guardaira, Seville was being privatized.

Antonio Gutiérrez Limones, the PSOE’s socialist mayor, will go down in history as the first mayor in Spain who dared to privatize a public library. He’ll be just another name in a long list of politicians who have attacted the public nature of libraries. A list headed up by the godfathers of the neoliberalism we’ve all had to suffer through: Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, two politicians on a crusade to privatize.

As anarchosyndicalists it is our duty to defend the public services won from long years of labor struggle. The arts, and especially their safehaven, libraries, have always been a public institution defended with enthusiasm and zeal by the left libertarian movement. We all know ignorance is one of the fiercest weapons of capitalism and the states and there is nothing more dangerous for the system than a well-read, free, critical people who passionately defend their collective belongings.

For that reason we think it is essential for us to raise our voice against this policy of privatization. It is a policy that attacks the rights of the workers and all the arts in general. We cannot, must not, allow our cultural heritage to become the plaything of the market.

NO MORE PRIVATIZATIONS! ESPECIALLY NOT LIBRARIES!
